Perspectives: Dr. Monique Kerman, Professor of Art History & African Art in the Diaspora

Dr. Monique Kerman is a Professor of Art History at Western Washington University. Her area of expertise is the art and visual culture of Africa and its diaspora, with a focus in her courses on enriching students’ knowledge and appreciation of not only African art and culture, but also of the ways in which slavery and colonialism have troubled that knowledge and appreciation within Western academia. Dr. Kerman’s expertise and research will be used to facilitate conversation emphasizing the Black/African American artists featured in Arbitrary Borders: Works by artists of color in Washington’s State Art Collection.

Dr. Kerman will hold her talk among the artworks in the Western Gallery.
