Part of the Exhibition

This body of work focuses on my Korean background and connection to my Asian identity. The techniques in my work are inspired by traditional Korean art forms found in architecture, specifically, Dancheong patterning and Korean mother-of-pearl lacquerware, that I abstract by adding textures and additional embellishments. Seeing both art forms during my time in Korea had created a memorable experience that feels nostalgic and a sense of re- connectedness to my identity. This inspired me to recreate this connection and the beauty of these art forms of Korean tradition, where I also explore themes of memory and personal connection. Integrated with these cultural designs, is a visual representation of embroidered Asian eyes in the background of my works that represents my personal experiences as an Asian American. Symbolizing this with my own eyes represents emotion and negativity that embodies personal feelings from an Asian view in American society. Combining this part of my identity with my Korean roots allows me to embrace my background but also speak from personal experience of growing up in America.

Engaging with themes of identity and memory in my work allows me to reflect on my background as an Asian American. Born in South Korea and raised in the US has given me different opportunities and experiences, as well as a unique perspective of my identity. I wanted to express that and reconnect with my Korean roots by representing my personal identity as well as Korean culture and to embrace it. My recent trip to Korea had been a very memorable experience and influenced my creative process, that represents my connection to my origin and self.
