Part of the Exhibition

I am motivated by a compulsion to communicate in my current body of work. The paintings are intended to act as a conversation between text, image, and viewer. However, that conversation is intentionally crude and nonsensical. I implemented bold text design, naive color choices, and an expressive handling of the materials to favor the chaotic nature of my paintings. The most common materials used are acrylic paint, clay, cardboard, and gel mediums. These materials allow for an increase in texture which elevates the work to the level of a low-relief sculpture.

The images included are always rooted in a personal narrative. In regards to the text, I organize it in such a way that is influenced by memes both in font and format. Which in turn dictates the attitude. Aside from the role of memes in my work, I have also taken inspiration from artists like Trenton Doyle Hancock and Philip Guston and their ways of dealing with the connection between text and image. My hope is to elicit a laugh from the audience followed by careful consideration of the relationship between the conflicting text and images and what they could represent.
