PAUL BERGER: THE MACHINE IN THE WINDOW

Paul Berger is nationally recognized for pioneering computer generated imagery. This mid-career retrospective exhibition traces his growth and progress toward the use of computer imagery from his early black and white, in-camera manipulated "Mathematics Series" (1976-78), to his latest use of the TARGA graphics system and large ink jet color prints. Rod Slemmons, Associate Curator of Photography, Seattle Art Museum, organized this exhibition which focuses on Berger's exploration of contemporary imagery and narration manifested through abstraction,juxtaposition, and automation.

COUNTERPOINT AND COLOR: PRINTS BY S. W. HAYTER

February 19 - March 16, 1991

From his Atelier 17 in Paris and New York, S. W. Hayter became known as the father of modern printmaking. This exhibition focuses on Hayter's prints from the 40s to his last works of the 80s, exemplifying his major contributions of the revival of burin engraving and the development of color printing techniques. Organized for the Western Gallery by guest curators Ann Friedman and Tom Johnston, this exhibition will feature works primarily drawn from the artist's estate in Paris and west coast collections.

February 24, 2 - 4 p.m., A Sunday Afternoon Reception hosted by The Friends of the Gallery with support from The Western Foundation. Gallery tour by Tom Johnston, guest curator.
