Artist Statement
Over the last couple of years, I have become attached to wolves, so much so that even most of my outfits involve some sort of wolf iconography. With this particular obsession I started my research into wolves and the stigma surrounding them. Wolves are often seen as ferocious and dangerous to our way of life, which led to their near extinction.
As a Queer man I noticed connections between this demonization of wolves, and queer history. With both groups facing years of mistreatment and misunderstanding. With this idea the wolves become both a protective symbol and a reflection for queer people. This is emphasized by referencing Chinese guardian lions that sit on either side of an entryway keeping the people inside safe. The scars on the wolves' histories and queer history are represented by the use of gold leaf in the Japanese practice of kintsugi. That damaged past will always be there, but the wolves are just as strong as ever.
By subverting and “queering” problematic, conservative and masculine imagery, such as the alpha wolf, log cabins, and hunting trophies, I am reclaiming these ideas and making it a personal sanctuary. In this surreal environment the wolves are being protected but are also the protectors, encouraging the viewer to come in for some respite from the outside world. With the work being reflection of my own queerness, it allows with a kitsch or even silliness to be found in this installation. This is a space for honest sentiment of being unashamed of who you are, and showing that off through play and satire. There are books to read, games to play, and some good company so please relax in my sanctuary and get some much needed respite.
